There is an energy in every
living thing be it plant or
animal. In my series of Earth
Spirits I personify that energy
into beautiful beings that are
delighting in their place in the
natural world.
I start by layering clay that has been imprinted with leaves, bark, seeds, shells, even fish and paw prints. The face I create and how the figure is embellished is inspired by the natural form in which the energy resides: a tree, a field of flowers, the sea. When bone dry, I bisque fire the work at about 1920 degrees (cone 04).
Using ceramic stains, I brush color onto the sculptures in an impressionistic, painterly style. The final firing is done at about 2150 degrees (cone 5), the low end of high fire. These stoneware sculptures are fully vitrified (nonporous) and can be displayed outdoors unaffected by rain or moisture.
