The Dead Artists Series
Who better is there for me to honor on the Day of the Dead than those pioneering artists
that broke through the barriers to create something completely new and innovative. With
this particular series of “calaveras”, skulls, I attempt to capture not only the look of the
artist, but their historical significance as well. I then employ their own painting style to
create an unmistakable representation of each famous artist.
The Mexican holiday of Dia de
los Muertos is dear to my
heart. Day of the Dead is a
joyous and respectful
celebration honoring our
ancestors and remembering
our loved ones who have
passed on to “the other side”.
Observed on November 2nd
and coinciding with
Catholicism’s All Souls Day,
much of the imagery is
steeped in the culture of the
ancient Aztecs. Skulls and
skeletons serve to remind us
of our mortality and that death
is a natural part of the cycle of
life and should not be feared.
For my Day of the Dead skull
masks, I find my inspiration in
the personalities of famous
people of the past and pay
homage to them in Mexico’s
traditional and visually
extravagant folk art style. My
subjects are memorialized as
an exaggerated, skull
caricature that portrays their
most significant features and
persona.
My skull masks are of low fire
earthenware colored with
transparent “under glazes” and
my own custom made "Boney
White" crackle glaze.
To give you a sense of size,
the skull portion of each
mask is approximately:
7" wide by 12" high.
Masks are priced from
$375 to $750. Please
contact for a price.
